Seasonal Trail Crew Workers

Trail Mix, Inc. (http://www.juneautrails.org) is hiring seasonal trail crew workers to build and maintain trails in Juneau, Alaska from April 14 through September 30, 2008. This is a full-time, non-benefited seasonal position. Salary is commensurate with experience and ranges from $9 to $13 per hour.

Juneau is located in the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska, surrounded by alpine peaks, active glaciers and the waters of the Inside Passage. Trail Mix, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created by the U.S. Forest Service, Alaska State Parks, and the City & Borough of Juneau to coordinate trail building efforts throughout Alaska's capital city.

Job Description
Our major project in 2008 is the $1.3 million Auke Lake Trail, a multi-use route near the University of Alaska Southeast. Other projects will include general trail maintenance on more than 100 miles of trails, including brushing, tread improvements, bridge repair, and leading volunteer work crews. Frontcountry construction projects will involve small motorized equipment, while backcountry sites will require lengthy hikes and the use of traditional handtools. Field crew staff are expected to produce high quality work in a safe manner under all weather conditions. Field staff are responsible for providing their own housing and transportation to and from the worksite. We do not anticipate any spike camps this season.

Applicant Requirements

Applicants of all skill levels are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those with a working knowledge of trail construction techniques and the operation and maintenance of motorized equipment related to trail construction (e.g. mini-excavators, power wheelbarrows, power brushers, chainsaws, etc.). Prior experience training and working with volunteers is highly desirable. Successful applicants will demonstrate a superior work ethic, a positive attitude, the ability to work well within a diverse crew, and a strong desire to build quality trails in the last frontier. Employees are responsible for providing their own transportation to the worksite. Minimum age is 16.

How to Apply
Visit www.juneautrails.org/about/employment.html for more information, or to download an application.

Local Environment

Juneau is the capital of Alaska, and has a year-round population of about 33,000. This number more than doubles in the summer months with the arrival of nearly one million visitors between May and September.

Much of Juneau clings to a narrow strip of land between the waters of the Inside Passage and dramatic 4,000-foot peaks. Despite being 900 miles north of Seattle, the climate is relatively temperate: summer temperatures range from the low 40s to high 70s, with more than 100 inches of rainfall each year. With no access to the continental road system, the only route to/from Juneau is by air or sea. Alaska Airlines offers daily flights from Seattle, and the Alaska Marine Highway provides regular ferry service from Bellingham, Wash., Prince Rupert, B.C., and Skagway & Haines, Alaska. The cost of living is approximately 25% higher than in the Lower 48.

For more information on Trail Mix, Inc., or to obtain an application, please visit http://www.juneautrails.org.
